MUMBAI: Several hundreds of dead fish, crabs and marine snakes were found on Juhu beach on Saturday, raising environmental concerns. Many local fisher men were seen picking up the marine creatures even as crows and seabirds hovered over them.
“I suspect that this has happened due to environmental pollution, along with dumping of debris and rocks into the sea for the coastal road project. Often, it leads to a temperature difference in the sea, besides lessening of oxygen levels which is harmful for marine creatures,” said D Stalin of NGO Vanashakti. He is also a member of the Bombay high court-appointed wetlands protection panel.
Another environmentalist, B N Kumar, of NatConnect Foundation, said: “I am writing to state envirionment minister Aaditya Thackeray about the incident at Juhu. We suspect this is due to toxic pollution. Untreated sewerage is sometimes released into the ocean.”
