CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu team might have made the finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament last season but had an average outing in the Ranji Trophy. In fact, success in the Ranji Trophy has remained elusive for the side for the past three decades. The last time they had won the Ranji title was back in the 1987-88 season.
WV Raman, who was part of the TN side during the 1987-88 campaign, cited failure to perform as a team when it mattered as one of the major reasons for TN’s lack of success in Ranji. The likes of R Ashwin, M Vijay, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik and Abhinav Mukund might have come up with notable individual performances whenever they donned the TN jersey but the players are failing to click as a unit.
“What is important is to have the collective belief that we can do it. Even if one or two players don’t feel that way, then that negativity can spread fast through the team,” Raman said on R Ashwin’s chat show ‘The Formula For Success’ on Youtube.
The India women’s team coach also feels that collective confidence is very important for a side who is harbouring hopes of winning titles. “We (TN) have a lot of players who have international experience and know how to handle challenges. But then that could prove detrimental. What happens is that, on a lot of occasions, a player feels that when Ashwin is there, he will definitely get us those wickets. But that shouldn’t be the way. Others need to step up too. The collective confidence and motivation should be there,” the former Tamil Nadu batsman said.
