NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta has written to lieutenant governor Anil Baijal to seek the reopening of gyms in the city. The fitness centres are closed since the lockdown was announced and the five months of closure has brought many of them on the brink of financial disaster.
“The economic activities are normalising slowly, but some activities like the fitness industry are still closed. The closure of the fitness centres has caused distress to associated businesses like food supplements traders. Fitness enthusiasts are also in trouble,” Gupta wrote in a letter to LG.
Delhi has nearly 5000 gyms, their closure has affected the livelihoods of nearly 1 lakh people.
Gupta requested the LG to allow gyms to open according to the unock guidelines of the central government.
Over a dozen gym owners of Delhi were detained recently while they were protesting near LG office for not granting permission to the gyms to open in the capital. The LG chaired Delhi Disaster Management Authority last week allowed hotels to open and granted permission for the weekly markets to open on a trial basis but did not permit the gyms and yoga institutes to open.
Delhi Gym Association (DGA) has been demanding the opening of the gyms since the unlocking process started.
