NEW DELHI: Despite it being COVID times, the 13th edition of the Indian Premier league has been a rampant success as far as on field action is concerned. Overcoming the hurdles posed by the forced six-month break, players have performed exceptionally well in the past 20 days, setting this year’s edition on fire.
And with each passing day, the level of performances of Indian and foreign players is going up a notch, making the league, a lot more fascinating. In the last week, players pulled off some scintillating performances with both bat and ball.
TimesofIndia.com conducted a single day poll asking people which player they think had the biggest impact in the last eight matches between October 3 to October 8.
The options were:
Shreyas Iyer (Delhi Capitals)
Shane Watson (Chennai Super Kings)
Kagiso Rabada (Delhi Capitals)
Rahul Tripathi (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Here are the details of the performances of these players in the past week and the poll results that were conducted on the TimesofIndia.com website and on Twitter.

Kagiso Rabada (DC) – 5 wickets in 2 matches
Pace sensation Kagiso Rabada has been at his absolute best this season in the IPL. The current Purple Cap holder, Rabada has been instrumental in Delhi Capitals’ success, bowling economically and picking up crucial wickets. With 12 wickets so far in this edition, Rabada was on-song last week, as he took 5 wickets in two matches against Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore. In the high-scoring clash against KKR, Rabada picked up the priced scalp of Andre Russell while in the match against RCB he returned figures of 4/24 (including the wicket of Virat Kohli) to move to the top of the bowling charts. In the five matches played so far, Rabada has a decent economy of 7.50.
Kagiso Rabada emerged as the clear winner on the poll conducted on the TOI website. With 47 percentage of the people who voted on the site saying his five wickets in the two games from Oct 3-8 made him the standout performer in that period. On Twitter meanwhile, Rabada was second with 27.5 percent of the vote share.
Shane Watson (CSK) – 133 runs in 2 matches
Struggling to find form in the first 4 matches this season, Chennai Super Kings opener Shane Watson displayed some mad batting skills in the past week. In the two matches against Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders, Watson scored a total of 133 runs, including 2 fifties (for Oct 3-8). In the clash against KXIP, Chennai were going into the match with 3 consecutive losses. But Watson along with his opening partner Faf du Plessis (87*) showcased a perfect opening performance to put his team right back on the winning track. Chasing 179, Watson and du Plessis built a record opening stand to help CSK win that game by 10 wickets. Watson in that match scored an unbeaten 83, which included 11 fours and 3 towering sixes. In the match against KKR, CSK lost the game in the final 10 overs of the chase, but Watson again was among the runs even in defeat. In the chase of 168, Watson scored 50 off 40 balls, playing the sheet anchors’ role. However his team went on to lose the match by 10 runs.
The CSK opener won the poll battle on Twitter with 34.5 percent of people rating his performance as the best in the past week. On the TOI website though, Watson garnered only 13 percent vote share.
Rahul Tripathi (KKR) – 117 runs in 2 matches
A product of a batting order reshuffle, Kolkata Knight Riders’ new opener Rahul Tripathi has been a welcome change for the franchise and they have found a good opening pair (Tripathi and Shubhman Gill). Rahul caught people’s attention with his performance against the Delhi Capitals, while chasing a mammoth 229. Coming in at no.8. Rahul blasted 36 off 16 balls and along with Eoin Morgan (44 off 18) almost took his side to an improbable win. His performance in that match forced the KKR management to open with him in the match against Chennai Super Kings, since Rahul is a specialist opener and he repaid the faith of the team management, scoring a match-winning 81 off 51 balls. In the two matches played in the last week (Oct 3-8), Rahul scored 117 runs.
With 25.3 percent vote share on Twitter and 23 percent on the TOI website, almost an equal number of people rated the batting performance of Rahul in the last week as the best.
Shreyas Iyer (DC) – 99 runs in 2 matches
Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer had a stupendous outing this week in the IPL. The 25-year-old not only put up a sensational performance with the bat but also marshalled his troops pretty well, guiding his team to two victories against Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively. In the match against KKR, Shreyas took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners, smoking a belligerent 88* off 38 balls. The carnage from Shreyas helped his team post a mammoth 228/4, before winning the match by 18 runs. In the clash against RCB, although Shreyas could only manage 11 runs with the bat, he showcased his captaincy skills against the batting giants. Defending 197 against the likes of Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers, Shreyas brilliantly chalked out plans against the opposition to restrict them to 137/9, helping Delhi win by a convincing 59-run margin.
The DC captain Shreyas Iyer received 18 percent of the votes on the website while the youngster garnered 12.8 percent of the votes on Twitter.
