MUMBAI: As many as 2,095 policemen from the Maharashtra Police have tested positive for Covid-19, out of which, around 1,200 are from the Mumbai Police.
On Wednesday, one more police constable from Malvani police station succumbed to Covid-19 taking the city’s toll to 14. In the state, 22 policemen have died of the disease.
According to the state police statistics, of these 2,095 cops, 236 are of officer rank. 75 officers and 822 police constables have recovered now and are doing well.
Till now, 22 cops have died out of which 14 are from the city police. Another 6,000 police personnel who were in contact with the infected personnel have been quarantined.
A total of 131 new Covid-19 cases were recorded among police personnel on Wednesday. An official from the state police said that in a bid to prevent the contracting of the disease the policemen are being regularly brief what precautions they should take and have been given protective gears like, face mask, PPE kits, hand sanitisers and preventive medicines like HCQ, protein and vitamins.
Interestingly at Sahar police station where 32 policemen including the senior police inspector Shashikant Mane who had tested positive, 30 of them have recovered. At JJ Marg police out of 37 policemen infected with covid, 20 of them have recovered. “Out of these 17 only five or six are in hospital, rest have recovering are in quarantine. The mortality rate in policemen is only 1 percent,” said Naval Bajaj, joint commissioner of police.
Official said that initially the moral of policemen was down and there was lot of panic but as many of them are recovering and the policemen above 55 years age and ailing with other disease have been asked to stay back, they have gained confidence.
Further to facilitate the policemen who are in the frontline warriors of the Covid-19 war, the state government has allocated them special dedicated hospitals and doctors.
“The state government’s announcement of Rs 50 lakhs to kin of the deceased cop and a job for kin and another 20 to 25 lakh from the Police welfare has further strengthen their faith,” said a senior IPS officer.
