MUMBAI: A 41-year old police sub-inspector attached to the Vikhroli police station succumbed to Covid-19 at Seven Hills hospital on Thursday.
The deceased cop is the third police officer to have fallen prey to the disease. So far 73 policemen from the state including 45 from the city police have died due to Covid-19 and more than 2,000 have tested positive.
Police sources said that he was initially admitted Guru Nanak hospital in Bandra but as his condition worsened he was shifted to Seven Hills on Tuesday.
Police said that the sub-inspector, a resident of Thane is survived by his wife and a 16-year-old son. Vikhroli police said that they are still verifying whether he had any comorbities.
He was the youngest of policemen who recently died due to Covid-19 and it has shaken the force. Several senior police officers have expressed concern over his death as he was fit with no other disease. “He reported sick on July 5 and was admitted the same day at Guru Nanak hospital but his condition worsened very fast. On July 7 he was shifted to Seven Hills hospitals where he was kept on ventilator and despite providing him Remdesivir vaccine, his condition did not improve and on Thursday he passed away”, said a senior police officer.
On Wednesday constable Kailash Dabhade, attached with the Bhandup police station succumbed to Covid-19.
The cops Covid-19 Summary report showed a cause of concern for the force with 11 deaths were reported in 28 days (April 25 to May 22) after the first death of head police constable from the Vakola police station was reported on April 25. “Policemen have been given HCQ tablets, besides this they are also been asked to take multivitamin tablets, zinc and D 12 tablets as precautionary measures. But due to the nature of duty it is nearly impossible for cops to evade it”, said an officer.
