MUMBAI: A 98-year-old became one of the oldest in the city to recover from coronavirus. Mathuradutt Bhandari, a resident of Yogi Nagar in Borivli, beat the virus after a 19-day hospitalization.
Bhandari developed cold and cough, following which he was admitted to Apex Super Specialty Hospital in Borivli on July 20.
Doctors said the nonagenarian did not need any oxygen or ventilatory support but was hospitalized for better management. He finally tested negative for the virus last week and went home on August 7. “All we need is determination to face the virus without fear,” was Bhandari’s message to everyone battling the infection.
His family said he eats a balanced diet, never misses his daily walk and always finds the time to read.
Chest physician Dr Jignesh Patel said people aged above 60-65 have been the most affected by Covid. “A person over 90 overcoming corona is a positive sign and a ray of hope for others,” he said. In Mumbai, 291 nonagenarians have got the infection, 56 of whom have succumbed. Doctors said even though the case fatality for the age group is high, many have recovered and gone home. Recently, a 103-year-old Thane resident was discharged after 20 days of hospitalization. The centenarian was born in 1917, a year before the Spanish flu.
