MUMBAI: Taking serious note of the chain-snatching incident in which a 52-year-old woman lost her life, the Pant Nagar police have booked a gang of five-under IPC sections of murder but also under the stringent act of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
While the police have successfully arrested three members of the gang they are looking for two more accomplices.
The case pertains to September 7, when Shahabai Ubale,a housewife who used to work as ayabai (hospital assistant) was walking to the BEST bus stop at Ramabai nagar in Ghatkopar when bike borne chain snatchers tried to snatch her purse. She held her purse firmly and refused to let it go and the pillion rider tried his full strength to snatch it.
In the melee she was dragged and she fell down in the incident. The biker sped away from the scene and a police team tried to chase but failed.
“She received serious injuries on her head and all over her body,
Ubale suffered multiple head injuries and was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. Owing to her serious condition, she was referred to Sion hospital where she died next day.’’ Said Suhash Kamble, senior inspector of Pant Nagar police. He said that they will produce all the three accused before the special MCOCA court on Monday.
Ubale used to reside with her daughter, son and daughter-in-law in Ramabai Nagar. She has been working as an ‘ayah-bai’ for 15 years at Pancholi Hospital in Sudarshan Society, Garodia Nagar, Ghatkopar East.
The Pant Nagar police then registered a robbery and a murder case against unknown persons.
“We had formed a special team to identify the bikers. With the technical help and cctv footage our officers identified and arrested three of them. Now as this is a serious offence and the gang of five have previous offences and are organised and hence we have invoked the stringent act so that it deters other criminals from indulging in such crimes.’’ Said Prashant Kadam, deputy commissioner of police (zone 7).
