MUMBAI: More than a month after diamond-studded ornaments worth Rs 27 lakh were stolen from a flat in Powai, the police said they arrested the thief, Babu Vishwakarma alias Ajay (24), from his Nalasopara home recently. He had splurged Rs 4.5 lakh on drugs. Two jewellers—Mahendra Ganchi (30) and Radhesham Soni (42)—who bought part of the booty and a middleman, Amjad Khan (34), have also been arrested, the police said. Most of the jewellery has been recovered from the two jewellers while a part of the booty was found stashed in a water tank in the house of the accused, said the police.
The theft took place in the the fifth-floor flat of businessman Harosh Kattukaran’s (41) at Lake Front Solitaire.
“The CCTV footage at the apartment showed him scale down through the gas pipeline, but we could not identify him, said deputy commissioner of police Ankit Goyal. “It was purely human intelligence that helped track him as he does not use a mobile.”
The theft took came to light the morning after when the businessman’s wife found the French window of the hall open. The wardrobe of the master bedroom was broken and the jewellery stolen. Two other flats in the building had been broken into.
Sub-inspector Pravin Mahamuni got a lead about Babu’s role in the theft, said assistant commissioner Milind Khetle. An informer had tipped him that he had seen Babu spend a few lakhs on drugs in recent days.
“Babu was picked. He said he entered the building after crossing a drain, climbed a tree to get to the second floor from where he climbed higher,” said Khetle.
