THANE: The stepbrother of the slain son of sitting Shiv Sena corporator Manik Patil has been arrested for allegedly murdering him and 3.7kg of stolen gold recovered from him, the police said. The accused, Sachin Patil (29), had shot his stepbrother Rakesh Patil (34) dead over a property tiff.
On September 23, the Patil family’s driver, Gaurav Singh (32) had been arrested. He told the police that Sachin and he (Singh) had hatched the murder conspiracy. They allegedly called Rakesh to Sachin’s house for a drink where they shot him dead with a country-made revolver, the police said. They wrapped the body in a bedsheet and sofa cover and dumped the body in the Vashi creek. The body is still to be found, said deputy commissioner of police SS Burse.
As Sachin had not been using a cellphone, the police found it difficult to trace him. A police team got a tip-off that Sachin was supposed to come to Ulve on Saturday and they laid a trap and arrested him.
The police said that the accused says he shot his stepbrother dead over a property dispute and later stole gold from the house so that his father would doubt Rakesh.
Sachin has been sent to police custody till October 4.
