The explosion occurred at around 7.30pm in the Nandolia Organic Chemicals Pvt Ltd in Tarapur. While the cause of the blast has not been ascertained, the sound was heard up to a periphery of around 10 km, including Boisar, Pasthal and Salwad villages and Nandgaon sea coast. “The blast is believed to have occurred in the reactor during a process, shattering the window panes of adjoining pharma units too,” said Pradip Kasbe, senior inspector of the Boisar Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) police station.
He said that a worker identified as Sandeep Kushwara was found dead inside the factory. The injured have been identified as Pramod Mishra (35), Dilip Gupta (28), Mohammed Ansari (31) and Umesh Kushwara (21).
The account manager of the factory Dhavanjeet Sharma told the police that 14 workers were in the night shift when the explosion took place. Nine workers remained unhurt as they ran out of the premises located on plot 141. Four workers sustained serious injuries and are being treated at the Tunga Hospital.
Two fire tenders from the MIDC reached the spot, followed by fire tenders from Palghar, Tarapur and Dahanu. The area has been cordoned off.
Police said that a case of accident has been registered. An FIR will be registered after officials from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), Vasai submit their report.
