Australia opener David Warner said he is expecting a good contest between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith during India’s tour Down Under, scheduled to start from December 3.
David Warner, speaking to India Today in the latest episode of Inspiration, said he expects the duel between Virat Kohli and Steve Smith to create a lot of interest among the viewers but as far as the team is concerned, Australia don’t focus on individual battles.
“In comparison with him [Kohli] and Smith, they are obviously two of the best batters in the world across all three formats. It is going to be a great battle between them if that’s what people are anticipating,” David Warner said.
“For us, it’s about Australia vs India, we don’t look at individual battles. If it’s individual, it’s bowler vs batter. At the end of the day, we have to do our research well. We know our line and lengths to bowl in Australia. Use our conditions right.
“Hopefully, the contest is great between bat and ball and great spirit of cricket battle as well.”
India are scheduled to begin their 4-Test series in Brisbane on December 3 before playing a day-night Test in Adelaide Oval on December 11. They will play the Boxing Day Test and the New Year’s Test, as usual, in Melbourne and Sydney.
While India clinched their 1st-ever Test series win on Australian soil during the 2018-19 series, the upcoming tour is going to be a firecracker, considering the returns of Steve Smith and Warner who missed the previous series due to their ball-tampering bans.
Stressing that sledging Virat Kohli will only prove detrimental to Australia, David Warner said both himself and the India skipper are similar characters when it comes to getting fired up by confrontations.
“I know myself, I thrive on the crowd, I thrive on people going at me on the field, those kinds of battles. I know Virat’s quite similar. If you go a little bit at Virat, he comes out harder with the bat and he plays amazing cricket.
“That’s what I try to do myself to get me going,” Warner said.
